Event date: April 16, 2023
On April 16, 2023, Future Prairie presented a one-day art installation at SATOR Gallery built around a big question: Is the Pacific Northwest ready for a museum of queer art? From noon to 6 p.m., visitors were invited to experience the installation and tell us what they would want from an institution devoted to queer art in our region. The project created space to imagine what a museum of queer art might preserve, exhibit, celebrate, and make possible. What stories should it carry forward? Which artists and communities should shape it? How could it support queer creative life while remaining accountable and accessible to the people it represents? For Future Prairie, the event was also an opportunity to treat community response as part of the artwork. Rather than arriving with a finished institutional model, we began with a question and invited people to help imagine the answer. The installation took place from 12–6 p.m. at 1709 SE Third Avenue in Portland. Acknowledgments Curated by Future Prairie and presented by SATOR Gallery. Thank you to SATOR and to everyone who visited, shared ideas, and helped us imagine a future home for queer art in the Pacific Northwest.
